We’ve been feeding the local badgers ever since we moved here over 25 years ago. A few individuals come to mind, but mostly they are remembered as family groups that can be seen by the light of the kitchen window after dark.
One was recently known as the lame badger and he would often appear from behind our garden seat at dusk – making sure that the early badger gets the peanuts. A few weeks ago, he turned up in the late afternoon, as we were getting ready to feed the llamas and goats. We stopped what we were doing and got a jug of peanuts for him and also a bowl of water, as it was still hot. Sadly, it was clear he was struggling to stand and once he had finished, we had to accompany him across the lane in case any traffic had to be stopped. I thought at the time that we probably wouldn’t see him again and I was right.
At least he did well to get to the age he did and we know that he never went hungry. The image featured above was taken a few days earlier and I was about six feet away with a 105mm lens.
Even though this story is sad, it has a funny side to it. One of the local pheasants was also in the garden at the time and I photographed her trying to steal peanuts from the badger. She was standing on the grass bank directly behind him.
