I‘ve really missed spending time with bugs this year. I mean… I went to all the normal places and many more than once, but they simply weren’t there. Hoping that numbers pick up again next spring, I thought I would share some images that were all taken on the same day in June last year.
I had driven all the way to Woods Mill in West Sussex in the hope of finding some assorted damselflies, but my favourite part of the reserve had been fenced off. Undeterred, I wandered round most of the woods and fields to find it was clearly a good time for hoverflies. The photograph featured at the top and the three below are all great pied hoverflies, one of my favourites.

This was one of a handful of footballer hoverflies that I spotted in the same area.

23 Oct 2025I have never seen, or heard of a footballer hoverfly. Nice shots and I wonder what team it plays for 🙂

23 Oct 2025It’s the black and white striped top. You’re the football expert. I’m sure you can think of a team.
Seriously though – they aren’t that uncommon, so keep your eyes open next summer 🙂
