We’ve had a really bad year with our pets, having lost our beautiful Chai back in July, followed by two of our rescued ferrets. We knew little Mork was getting old, so weren’t surprised when he began losing weight and we said goodbye to him a few weeks later. Having decided that we weren’t going to take any more rescues, a local vet practice called asking if we could collect a stray. Of course, he then needed a companion on his half of the ferret room and we asked a rescue friend about adopting a bonded pair. We went to collect them on a Sunday afternoon, but the hob was mostly bald. Otherwise, he seemed fine and his foster carer assured us his coat would grow back soon.
I spotted small pink spots on his skin and so after just five days, I took him to our vet. She thought he may have a blood clotting disorder and suggested tests the following week. He seemed so sluggish by the following Tuesday that I took him back where they did a quick conscious scan. His spleen looked totally black, but worse still, he began sneezing blood. After having him for just nine days, I had to make the heartbreaking decision to let him go.
And here we are in the middle of November and we had to have the farm vet out yesterday to have Rodney goat put to sleep. We believe he developed acidosis, but no idea where from as our goats aren’t fed any grain. He was treated aggressively for three days, but never started eating again.
I know I need to write some new blog posts, but my heart isn’t in it at the moment. So for now… here is a lovely female keeled skimmer that I photographed a few years ago.
