Penmon Point

Penmon Point

Penmon Rocks

After all the luck I had at Ynys Llanddwyn, it only seemed fair that some of my other North Wales locations didn’t come up to scratch. I was in a bad way following the 8km trek along the beach and round the tidal island, so I abandoned my plans to be out before sunrise the following morning. Although I still visited all the locations, the light was in the wrong place and for the most part, I just looked for a few minutes and then drove on.

The lighthouse at Penmon Point was next on my list and passing the lovely Menai suspension bridge, I gave up on that too. The tide was very low and instead of beautiful reflections in the water, it was just a sea of mud. Never mind. I hadn’t been to the eastern side of Anglesey before and it was a pleasant drive in the early afternoon sun. The light began to fade as I approached my destination, to be replaced by an incredibly dark band of cloud. So dark, that I began to get excited about photographing that behind the black and white lighthouse. Slowing down as I neared the little toll booth, I had the opportunity to check the cloud out in more detail and it became obvious that it wasn’t going to stick around for long. If I wanted some photographs, I would have to hurry. Speeding along the potholed track as fast as I dared, I soon arrived at the car park. I grabbed my gear and shot down to the closest viewpoint I could find.

Penmon Point

With at least one image in the bag, I walked a little closer, where I could see some visitors had created numerous stone cairns. Thinking they would make good foreground interest, I picked one where I could set up my tripod and shot a set to focus stack in Photoshop. The final image is featured above.

With one more destination on my list for the day, I packed up, returned to my car and drove off less than an hour after arriving.
