
As I said in my previous blog post, having just had so much luck with the bittern, I didn’t want to push that too far by trying to follow him after he crossed the track. Once I got off the phone to my husband, I turned round on the other side of the gate and headed back up the track. There is a rough triangle of ground there, with reeds along the back. Popular with the local hares, I had discovered in previous years that the marsh harriers like to nest on the far side. Having had absolutely no luck last year though, I wasn’t sure what to expect.
I parked up in my favourite spot and it soon became clear this was going to be a busy day. Three marsh harriers kept taking off and flying over the reeds and then one returned carrying the biggest rat I have ever seen.
