Mad March hares

Mad March hares

Elmley Hares 1

Perhaps I should begin by admitting that this set of images were actually taken on 2nd April. I had been visiting Elmley nature reserve during March, in the hope of photographing some of their hares, but not had any luck. In fact, I had read that actually seeing boxing hares in the middle of the day was very rare indeed and I had almost given up.

However, parking up on a lovely, early spring afternoon, it didn’t take long to spot three hares in the mid-distance. March and April are the hares’ breeding season and the males chase the females, who sometimes don’t want the attention. It is then that they turn around and “box” the males to discourage them. The fighting began just close enough for me to take a few images, but then they zig-zagged across the meadow, getting nearer to my little car. Eventually, they actually ran towards my car, veering off at the last second and crossing the main driveway. At full pelt, an adult hare can reach a top speed of 40 miles per hour.
