I‘ve been having a few issues with my camera and 150-600mm lens. Twice this year, the autofocus started playing up and after a period of time, stopped working altogether. My camera has now gone in for repair, but it won’t be ready until the middle of next month at the earliest. I can’t live without my photography for that long and so last week I took delivery of a second-hand Nikon D810. I’ve already taken it out for a test run with the long lens and they work perfectly. The slightly newer body is lighter and faster than the Nikon D800 and the images are sharper, with better detail.
It looks as though I will continue to use this newer body for bird photography and carry on with my beloved D800 for everything else.
These images of a heron flying across the Elmley nature reserve at sunset were the last successful photographs before the focus died.

13 Dec 2023I love it for birds. I can’t do any short bursts with the D800 because of buffering problems, but it’s something I can do now. I had never really considered having a back-up body, but the repair turnaround times are scary! 🙂
