Snowy Trees

With winter due to finish in just ten days, I thought it was appropriate to write about these snowy trees photographed twenty years ago.

I remember a fresh fall of snow had tempted me to get out with my camera, but living near the bottom of a valley means we often get snowed in. I didn’t want to risk getting stuck and so I set out with my trusty film camera (Olympus OM2n) on a footpath crossing our neighbour’s land. On paper, it all looked so easy. The path left the lane just beyond the river crossing and after a hundred yards or so, it turned right and meandered up the hill, eventually reaching the main “A” road. I had planned to either return the same way, or to walk the short distance to the beginning of our lane. I hadn’t planned on getting lost.

I‘m not entirely sure where things began to turn pear-shaped, but with snow on the ground, I quickly lost track of the worn pathway. I don’t suppose it gets used much, if at all, and the signs vanished after the first right-hand turn. I was just happy to be out with my camera and wasn’t too bothered. I tend to live by the saying that all roads lead to Rome.

I didn’t take many photographs in the end, but I was struck by this broken tree trunk that had become lodged in the branches of its neighbour. After processing, the negative was scanned at home and saved as a PSD file.

I eventually found a way out by picking a direction and walking until I reached the lane. I got home after three hours in the bitter cold, but happier for my little adventure.

  1. It made me cold and worn out just reading this 🙂 How times have changed since the old film days and would you change the shot on your new camera?

    1. That’s a fascinating question. I’ve seen the scanned image at 100% and actually had some trouble with the processing. I can look at it today and still find things wrong, but you know… I wouldn’t actually change a thing. It’s a bit like street photography, where you get one chance and you either take the shot or not. Maybe there is an element with film photography, in that you are always aware of wasting film. I believe it makes you work harder 🙂

  2. A new adventure!
    Marvellous photo ♥️

    Have a great weekend!

    1. I’ve never minded the winter, but this one is proving a challenge. We’ve had rain every day for as long as I can remember and our garden and fields are flooded. We could really do with some cold weather now. You have a great weekend too! 🙂
