Having photographed my first ever barn owl at Sandwich Bay in January last year, I had to wait until December until I saw the next one. I had decided to try Elmley nature reserve on Boxing Day, thinking it might be quiet. It seemed as though I wasn’t the only one with the same idea and having been offered a chocolate as I drove in, I found the car park was quite full.
I saw a lovely kestrel before setting off on the track again, but I hadn’t gone far when the short-eared owls put on a wonderful display. That wasn’t the end though, as by 2.00, they had been joined by a stunning barn owl. I clearly couldn’t focus (literally) on more than one bird and so I left the SEOs to their fun and concentrated on the barn owl.
At one point, he flew right over my car and I was able to hear the soft beating of his wings.
