Every year from about the beginning of September, I look in online birding groups to see if the kingfishers are showing well at Stodmarsh. It’s a reserve I love, but being a three-hour round trip, it’s one I don’t like to make too often. Oddly enough, since I’ve been going, it seems to take exactly three visits before I have images that I am happy with. This year was no different.
There had been reports of a scarlet ibis showing from another hide and so, on my first trip, I made the long trek across the reserve on foot. I stayed for nearly four hours and only ever saw the ibis from a great distance. The one image I kept was for reference only. There were no sightings of kingfishers at the usual hide all day.
On my second and third visits, I got lucky with the kingfishers, but not so much with the weather. Actually… I prefer to photograph them under cloudy skies as the highlights don’t blow out on their pale blue feathers and better detail can be seen. I’m still in the process of going through those images, so here are a pair of greylag geese as they came in to land. Photographs taken from the distant hide on my first trip.
