This is my current favourite image. I had already had a pretty successful day at Elmley nature reserve, having photographed a grey heron and two short-eared owls at the same time. I had taken some nice shots of the heron, but was distracted by an owl flying in from the left and managed to grab a couple of photographs. As the owl passed my little car, the heron was still posing nicely. Then, I noticed two short-eared owls were fighting in the sky, just behind my car. I almost felt dizzy, switching from one bird to another and by the time the heron had moved out of range, I sat back and breathed a deep sigh.
There was no time to rest though, as out of the corner of my eye, I saw a flash of cream in the field to my right. It was a barn owl and he was hunting for field voles. I had to make a quick decision, risk using my camera from the driver’s side, with limited space, or drive to the end of the track and turn round.
I opted for the latter and by the time I had parked up and moved over to the passenger side, I could see the owl had perched on a fence post. He didn’t stick around for long and took off almost immediately. I wasn’t sure if he was going to head across the field again, but he only flew a short distance before landing on one of the larger gate posts.
