The bugs are gone

Grasshopper on Scabious

There’s no point trying to ignore the fact that most of the bugs have gone for the year. Yesterday, I went to local woods and was struck at how the grass had turned brown in the recent hot spell. There were no flowers left at all and in the space of about three hours, I only found a few spiders and a couple of flesh flies. I still have a few images to work on though, so I shouldn’t be sad.

It’s always a hard time for me, with the end of the bug season and the winter birds not yet on the horizon. My normal subject in early September would have been kingfishers, but the reserve cut back the reeds drastically a couple of weeks ago and the bird that was starting to perch in front of the hide seems to have done a runner. Never mind.

I‘m off to Dorset very soon for a few days of landscape photography. I very nearly typed “off to sunny Dorset”, but the weather forecast at the moment is looking pretty dire. Rain on all three days, with some looking torrential and strong winds too. So much for still, misty mornings as a backdrop for some of the iconic locations. Forecasts have a habit of changing though… even at the last minute and if this trip really is a wash-out, I can always save the itinerary and try again next year.

In the meantime, the little grasshopper featured at the top was photographed at the end of August and is nearly the last from what has been an interesting season.

  1. Have a great time in ‘sunny’ Dorset and look forward to seeing your shots.

    1. Thank you Steve. In 24 hours, the forecast has turned to no clouds for all but one afternoon. I need some cloud for interest! At least the wind appears to be dying down, so I may get those misty mornings after all 🙂

  2. The weather forecast told us: rain, and storm. We are still waiting but the sunny side of this south country gifts us with lots of beautiful insects 😊
Your photo is awesome, the little guy looks so much appreciating the delicate flower!
    Have a great Monday!

    1. If you watch the forecasts carefully, you can see they change drastically from day to day. I’m not going to bother now and it will be a surprise when I arrive. Enjoy your beautiful insects 🙂
