Having the opportunity to photograph short-eared owls is one of the highlights of my year and Sandwich Bay has proved to be one of the best locations. It’s a long four-hour round trip for me, but I love the drive and returning through the port of Dover after the sun has set is a rare treat. Dusk is a brilliant time to be close to water, as any light left in the sky reflects off the surface far more than you would expect. Combine that with the sunset colours spreading around the horizon and it’s easy to think you are somewhere exotic, like Rio de Janeiro, rather than Kent.
Sadly, I’ve only made the trip twice this season. In many respects, that’s good news because both the barn and short-eared owls have been showing much better closer to home. I do miss Sandwich though. If the weather perks up in the next couple of weeks, I’ve promised myself one more visit. In the meantime, these were taken in early November last year.
