No… I didn’t know what it was either until I found one last year. (And it took me an entire evening on Google trying to identify it too).

This was the tachinid fly that I found on the way home from a fruitless trip to Woods Mill. I had gone there in the hope of finding some early willow emerald damselflies, but had drawn a blank. I stopped at Ditchling Common on the way home and had found nothing there either. Until I was on my way back to the car park. I spotted this stunning fly on some thistle flowers, but the afternoon had turned windy and I wasn’t hopeful of getting any sharp images.

This was the day that I opted to retire my old Nikon D800 and begin using the Nikon D810 for my macro work. Once I got home and opened the files up on my PC, I was thrilled to see how many were in sharp focus. Maybe I made the right decision and the older camera was beginning to have issues with a shorter lens. It had already given up twice while I was shooting birds with my Sigma 150-600mm.

It wasn’t the only thing to give up on that day, as my little Smart car began having problems on the way home. It made it back, but a local garage found the exhaust had parted company from the car and no replacement could be found. It was likely to be an uneconomical repair anyway, as they doubted it would pass the next MOT.

So… new camera and new car and hopefully new adventures to be had this coming year.

  1. Lovely shots as per usual and I hope that you can find a decent car soon for your adventures 🙂

    1. Cheers Steve! I should have said – all this happened in August. Derek very kindly bought me another little Smart car. It’s one of the older models, but only had 15,000 miles on the clock. It’s perfect for my trips 🙂
