Chai is gone

Chai is gone

Chai in the Sun 11

We lost our beautiful Chai yesterday afternoon. Rescued in Romania at just ten weeks old, she had been attacked in a park. She was cut all over, had her lower lip detached, had her throat cut and both front legs broken. I will forever be grateful to my rescuer friend who took her in and made endless daily visits to the vet until she had recovered.

We adopted her at the age of six months, with her two best friends from Mara’s Heaven. They are eleven years old now and until last Friday, were all in the best of health. We had noticed Chai having the occasional bout of being off her food. We took her to our vet immediately each time and a quick anti-sickness injection put her right within an hour. It seemed the same on Friday morning, but by early afternoon, Chai had been violently sick twice. This time, the injection didn’t seem to work and so we took her to an out of hours vet at 10.00 that night. I rushed her back to our own vet as soon as they opened the following morning, but nothing they did for her seemed to help.

A blockage was suspected and we agreed to surgery, but by 5.00 yesterday afternoon I got the call to say the blockage was due to a massive tumour – intestinal lymphoma. We rushed in to say goodbye and I don’t think my life will be the same again.

Chai was a once in a lifetime cat. So incredibly wise and loving. She slept on my legs every night, or spent ages suckling on my neck while making biscuits on my shoulder. When she finally stopped, we would both be soaked through and she would settle down with both front paws over my arm and go to sleep.

She was the most beautiful soul in an ever-increasingly ugly world. I miss her so much…
