Elmley starling

Elmley Starling 2

I’ve had a few fruitless days at Elmley earlier this year. On one occasion, the only thing I managed to photograph was a single starling. I often see them at the reserve, but in large flocks and they tend to keep their distance. If I try and approach slowly, they are always gone by the time I’ve moved into the passenger seat. Not this bird though.

He was close to the track and completely alone and he caught my eye because he was singing his little heart out. The light wasn’t too good on that day and the image is below.

A couple of months later and I was in the same situation, having seen nothing all day. Then… I spotted him. In the same spot, totally alone and singing away to himself. It seems very unlikely that this would have been the same bird, but I like to think so.

  1. Starlings! My 7th Air Force Bomb Wing 😜♥️
Every year they arrive end February. The squadron (about a dozen) “bomb” my cat treats plates with a great efficiency until sunset for about two months. Mid May they are ready to fly away in the north Europe again. Their arrival announces that spring is here!
    Your shots are amazing ♥️
    Ciao

    1. Oh Sid. How wonderful! We have a massive flock of starlings at home – about 70 individuals. There are a lot of youngsters at the moment, all standing around and demanding to be fed 🙂
