After losing our wonderful Buddy a couple of months ago, adopting another cat was probably the furthest thing from my mind. Then, I started following the progress of two kittens being cared for by one of my wonderful Romanian friends. Lizzie was blind and little Luna had been thrown over the wall of the yard where Lizzie was living. They quickly became the best of friends and fingers were crossed that they could be adopted together.
My hopes were raised when I saw a request for a home check in the UK, but sadly, it wasn’t meant to be. Then, I found out that the lady who had been fostering the kittens for my friend had been in hospital for many weeks and was unlikely to be out any time soon. My friend was visiting once a day, but they were living outside with only a tiny shed for shelter. I spoke to my husband and in the space of two minutes, we offered to adopt and preparations were made. Happily, the girls were big enough to be spayed before they travelled and a spot was reserved on a van leaving on 3rd December.

We collected them from a motorway service station two days later. I sat in the back of the car with them on the drive home and they chewed my fingers through the bars of the cat basket and purred the entire way. They spent the first night in the attic, with plenty of cat beds and the cats’ play den. By the morning, they had settled very well and so we let them have the run of the house. Lizzie found her way downstairs in the first few minutes and had mapped out the entire house within a few days. Our other cats have accepted them well. Tarzan is besotted with his new girlfriends and he washes them, plays with them and generally follows Lizzie everywhere to make sure she is OK. I don’t think he quite understands that she can’t see, but he knows there is something different about her.
Today, they will open their Christmas presents, play with new toys, get high on fresh catnip and eat the finest cat treats. I think Buddy would have approved.
